This past weekend, I had the pleasure of spending time and space with some family that I love dearly. I did not meet them until 2010, but in 7 short years they are as dear to my heart as my blood family.
I first met them at their home in Michigan through a mutual acquaintance that I no longer associate with. I have stated on more than one occasion that the only good thing that acquaintance ever did in my life was introduce me to this family. He introduced me; they got to keep me!
We were fast friends because we had the common bond of Grateful Dead music. We shared stories of shows and got to know each other better. Sadly, the patriarch had cancer and passed away with me only getting to meet him twice. I could see his sweet spirit right away, though. You just know when someone is truly good inside. He certainly lived an interesting life, and raised some awesome boys.
The family matriarch is a sweet, wonderful woman. She is a crafter and vendor. She has been on the road more than anyone else I know personally. It started for her in childhood, travelling with her parents, who were ministering to people and singing gospel music. When she discovered the music and community of the Grateful Dead, that was it. She was all in! I love that she has seen so many places, connected with so many people, sold her crafts and crochet items to multitudes, and shared love and peace with the world for all these years.
The 3 boys that I got to know are each awesome in their own ways. One I found to be rather quiet, but yet so funny! He told me some great stories. His wife and I took off one evening and drove to Ann Arbor, MI (about an hour from where we lived at the time) to attend a pre-Christmas on location taping of the Ellen Show (Ellen wasn't there-they had the crew there and were doing big giveaways and a Toys For Tots thing). The next son and his wife are just bright shiny lights. Sweetest couple! They possess many talents. Have you ever seen anyone spin poi? So amazing. They are giving and loving and kind. Also fun as all get out! I saved the son I know best for last. He is a serious business man. He is like a jack of all trades, but he is the master of them too. He is so stinkin' smart. He holds more than one college degree. His brain is a sponge. He learns things and then never forgets. He is always thinking, and he is always watching. He also knows psychology and can figure a person out in 3.5 seconds. Under all that business and intellect is a wonderful heart. If he is your friend, he has your back 100%. No matter what. FAMILY.. He and I have had many long talks. I love him dearly! His son is his "mini me". He is just about a teen now and wow....so smart. His vocabulary blows me away!
I also have gotten to meet some of their extended family through these years. Also great folks! I am blessed to be on this journey called life with some wonderful people. Love you guys to pieces!
